LNG as Marine Fuel - the first step towards deep-sea shipping GHG reduction

Following the launch of the SGMF’s (Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel) video on why LNG is currently the only viable cleaner fuel solution to help deep-sea shipping cut its emissions, Fabiola Hernandez, HSEQ and Technical Director at Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions (TMFGS), looks at why LNG is perfectly positioned to accompany the shipping industry towards the International Maritime Organization’s target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by 2050.
Deep-Sea Shipping has been using heavy fuel oil for over 70 years now and the industry faces the challenge of developing cleaner, practical alternatives for today and tomorrow. It is a challenge that involves change and with change comes uncertainty and potential confusion amid the need to identify the best possible solutions.
With 90% of global trade moved through shipping, the industry’s role in keeping the wheels of global economies turning remains pivotal. However, maritime transport faces growing scrutiny surrounding the environmental impact through emissions and in turn tighter legislation and standards. IMO 2020 is with us, the 2030 Carbon Reduction1 is just around the corner and the target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 20502 is clearly in sight.
The reality is that the shipping industry needs to take action now and this implies to have a fuel alternative that is safe, sustainable and proven for ship operators to commit.
LNG delivers that and with it, the opportunity for us to rise to those challenges, whilst we work to develop alternative fuels for the future from sources such as Bio Methane, Synthetic Methane, Ammonia (NH3) and Hydrogen (LH2).
These developing technologies are still too ‘early-stage’ to provide effective fuel solutions today. LNG is the only transitioning solution that is available now. It moves us on significantly to a much cleaner fuel position by delivering proven performance and results.
At Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions, we believe that the environmental benefit for those vessels already using LNG is:
- 99% reduction in Sulphurous Oxides
- 99% fewer particulates
- Up to 85% reduction in Nitrous Oxides
- About 20% fewer Green House Gases
